As part of the Cocatrel Cooperative in Tres Pontas, Sul De Minas there is a group that was started this year for the female farmers who are part of the Cooperative. The Cafeina Group are made up of 21 % of the members of the Cocatrel Cooperative equating to 1154 women producers. The idea was to encourage the engagement of these female producers in the decision making process of the Cooperative. They are organised to have meeting every two months to improve their education and knowledge but also to increase their visibility in the coffee growing community and promote theri involvement.
This Coffee comes from two producers in this region Adalgisa Vilela & Flaviane Botrel who have been involved in coffee their whole lives.
Adalgisa Vilela works and runs their farm 50ha farm Fazenda Pinhal with with her husband. Adalgisa when she married and returned to the farm in 1985 decided to take an agronomy course to help her understand coffee production. On their farm they work on the with a group of women who harvest the coffee and after the harvest help with crop management for the remainder of the year.
Fazenda Matao is over 100 years old and Flaviane Botrel is heavily involved in the day to day running of the farm. The farm is quite large at 450ha with 300ha planted with coffee. Flaviane is always looking at ways in which they can improve their quality and produce specialty coffees.
These coffee is a natural lot made up of Mundo Novo and Yellow Catuai. The coffee is machine harvested before the grades are separated and then left to dry on the patio of 7 - 10 days. The coffee is then left to rest for 30 days before being hulled and then delivered to the cooperative.
